Former Senate Chaplin Dr. Richard Halverson said that the best request to pray for any political leaders who are hurting our nation is this:

“Change their hearts or change their seats.”

Even so, in the face of Vladimir Putin’s brutal, ruthless, barbaric war against Ukraine, this is our most strategic prayer to pray. We must do so with the urgency and tenacity it requires!

If so, here’s one way to pray. It’s how I’m praying. Feel free to make it your own.

Dear Father, we come to you in the powerful name of our Lord Jesus Christ, “the Ruler of the kings of the earth” (Rev. 1). We come with this one request regarding a fellow sinner named Vladimir Putin:

You know the terror and destruction he is bringing upon both the Ukrainian and Russian people—and the existential danger in which he has placed the entire world. So for the sake of your creation, for the sake of millions of lives made in your image, for the sake of advancing your saving purposes in Christ Jesus throughout all the earth, we have one appeal to make:

Save Putin! Convict him of his sin and evil. Draw him by faith in your promises to his only Hope and Redeemer. Purify and transform his heart and his ways in this hour.

Or, remove Putin! Eliminate his position and power as soon as possible by whatever means it takes.

As an infant, he was baptized in Jesus’ name in the Russian Orthodox Church. Therefore, it is our desire that you would have mercy on him. Miraculously, make this day become the day of his salvation. Send the Holy Spirit to bring him into a saving encounter with the crucified, resurrected, and reigning Savior, so highly exalted among Russia’s true believers.

But if that is not possible—if his heart has become too hardened against you–then take immediate action against him according to words in Isaiah 40, now fulfilled through the active reign of our King Jesus:

He brings princes to naught
and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing…
He blows on them and they wither,
and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

One way or the other, dear Father, ACT NOW! Answer us, Lord, so that your name may be glorified before the world, the supremacy of your Son may be displayed before the earth, and your redemptive plan in the Lord Jesus may continue to unfold among the nations, full of grace and truth.

To God be the glory! AMEN.
