A Personal Letter from David Bryant

The Destiny of America—
and Mine

TO ALL FRIENDS of our mission for Jesus Christ:

Robyne and I are ready to enter into in what we believe will be for us, for Proclaim Hope / Christ Now, and for our team—and all of you!—a summer of destiny.

Destiny? Consider this definition: A future predetermined by outside forces for a person or a course of events.” It applies to everyone, especially all who belong to Jesus.

Our destiny? I believe most of our work with CN this summer is destined by our Father to form our single most significant resource legacy from over five decades of ministry.

Our destiny? During August, for the first time in four years, Robyne and I will take a vacation!

Much of the time we’ll spend in prayer, listening to our Father as we review the "big picture" of our lives and ministries over the past 57 years of serving Jesus together—what the Lord has taught us; what we’ve attempted; where we missed the mark; what we’ve accomplished.

We intend to quantify and qualify all that the Spirit has done with us throughout the decades to help us prepare for the mission challenges we believe lie just ahead of us this fall.

Our destiny? As is often claimed and has been confirmed repeatedly to the two of us by our life experiences, "Past is prologue." Accordingly, we’ll be looking for how, where, and when an American CHRIST Awakening will make its unique and strategic contribution at this decisive moment in our nation’s history—all of which is about the destiny of America—and of our mission.

That leads me to other sobering questions:

The destiny for America? American democracy, American global influence—and above all, the advance of the saving cause of Jesus Christ in our own land and from our land to the nations—all of it is in peril. Real peril!

The destiny for America? Experts on all sides are predicting we are moving fast toward an eruption greater than our Civil War in the 1860s. In fact, there are ominous warnings from the well-informed that we are shaping up to look increasingly and uncannily like Germany right before the Nazi forces started taking over in the 1930s.

I never, ever thought it would come to this in my lifetime. But here we are.

The destiny for America? Political and corporate corruption, along with widespread acceptance of all kinds of immorality, are rising on every side. In addition, we are being ripped apart, deceived, divided, and above all, diverted from our original mandate laid out so clearly at our founding by the confluence of the First Great Awakening to Christ with the vision of the Declaration of Independence.

The destiny for the Church in America? The Christian movement in our land is not immune; it is also being increasingly ravaged. The culprits include demonic forces from the outside and idolatrous forces on the inside—all of it enflamed by the "lord of the flies" whom Jesus called "the Father of lies."

The destiny for the Church in America? Along with our nation, amazingly, much of the Church in America is being swamped, almost daily, by all kinds of confusions and deceptions. Increasingly, bonds of trust are being broken, in turn splintering and deflating our testimony for the gospel.

I am not overstating the situation. America and the Church in America have been accelerating toward this inflection point for decades. Research from organizations like Pew, Barna, and others confirms this reality.

Time is short. The judgments of the Lord will not tarry indefinitely. Reviewing the manifestations of God’s “wrath” in Romans 1, one might conclude they have already begun.

The destiny for all of us in America? At the moment, it seems that we're like those “living in a land of deep darkness," as we read in Isaiah 9:2. Even now, a gloom continues to descend more deeply upon our people.

But thanks be to God, the Bible claims about our Lord Jesus Christ in John 1:5 that he is the light of the world, that shines into the darkness, and that the "darkness can never extinguish it” (NLT).

Those are not empty words. They define the very promise held out to us as we serve an American CHRIST Awakening. This Christward revival is all about outside forces determining the course of events.

The destiny for all of us in America? This impending, extraordinary, gracious, merciful, righteous, life-giving, widespread intervention by our reigning Redeemer will secure the ONLY hope for the survival of America.

He has done it before. He is able, willing, and ready to do it again.

The gospel promise is this: Such a moral, relational, and spiritual revolution in our Redeemer is poised to be put in motion right now. It will unfold as the Son of God is proclaimed from sea to shining sea by a great host of the people of God who have become wholly alive by the Spirit of God to a far more wonderful vision of their Savior and, therefore, become far more committed to his Kingdom purposes.

America’s destiny—and ours—are wrapped up together.

Therefore, it is our goal to return in August with
clear marching orders from the Father of Glory,

about how he intends for our team to move forward

in serving an American CHRIST Awakening,
as we continue to engage in the ongoing battle

for the very soul of America.
