Major Predictions for 2026— Plus, the One They Forgot!

Now that we’re almost a month into the new year, what do you think lies ahead for America in 2026?
On January 2, 2026, POLITICO Magazine published an article titled “15 Scenarios That Could Stun the World in 2026.” They reached out to a cross-section of futurists, scientists, foreign policy analysts, and other leaders to get their “take” on what might happen in 2026.
POLITICO introduced the article this way:
Expect the unexpected, the saying goes, and that was certainly true in 2025. President Donald Trump was a major source of global and domestic disruption, but the year’s instability was also driven by natural and manmade disasters, political violence, and technological progress.
There’s no reason to believe 2026 will be any calmer, what with looming elections, ominous financial portents, and increasing climatic instability. … What is the unpredictable, unlikely but entirely plausible thing that could happen in 2026 that could completely upend American life?
Among the scenarios they received are these sobering possibilities:
- AI. More and more AI systems will be deployed and eventually have billions of interactions with each other—often as adversaries—with unpredictable results.
- Economy. US capital markets are on fire. If history repeats itself, we risk undermining the global economic well-being.
- War. Syria will descend into a vicious renewal of civil wars, with millions of lives at stake. Deadly strife will be repeated in many other nations, as well.
- Division. There could be a shift from a highly polarized to a fractured society with no stable source of authority and stabilization.
- Nuclear. Russia will feel pushed to finally put its nuclear arsenal to work.
- Violence. Leading up to the US election midterms, political violence will increase significantly.
- Climate. More and more of the world will cease to have sufficient water even as temperatures keep rising.
- National upheaval. A convergence of political, social, and moral upheavals in America will upend our nation on every front, from government to family, to military, to affordability, and even to national security.
Of course, only the Lord knows what will truly happen. What possibilities might you add to the list?
Here’s what I would add:
This year, things will become so desperate in America that God’s people will wake up to renounce every person, politician, program, or project they are looking to for deliverance and return in brokenness to the Lord Jesus Christ for ALL he is. They will return in order to know him, love him, and follow him alone in the fullness of his supremacy.
Despite all the countervailing winds that warn of doom, the “Wind of God”—the Holy Spirit—will sovereignly surprise us by laying aside God’s “remedial judgment” upon our land by bringing forth, instead, “remedial redemption.”
By a fresh renovation and rekindling of the hearts of God’s people toward God’s Son through the Church, God’s saving power will reclaim and infuse the life of America on her 250th anniversary with what can only be called a NEW American Revolution—a Christward revolution.
