to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
Dear Father, My spirit soars as I read in today’s Scripture of Mary being told by an angel that she would have an immaculate son, Whom she was to name Jesus (the Savior). I highly exalt Jesus that the angel’s additional pronouncement powerfully ties together His unbounded greatness as the One and Only Son of the Most High, and His assignment by You to reign on the throne of King David forever! Oh, Most High God, I thank You that once again You made it absolutely clear to all who are listening that You sent Your divine Son into the world as the great Savior and King. I love to think about the matchless depth of the Father/Son relationship that You and Jesus have always had, whether He was living on earth or by Your side in heaven. I love His testimony about Your relationship in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one,” and in John 17:21a, “Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.” Please open the eyes, minds and spirits of me and all other believers to the supreme majesty of the Son of the Most High, and help us to worship and live in Him alone. In His spectacular name I pray these things. Amen.
