Jesus is…
Joseph’s Son

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.
Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”
Dear Father, I am saddened that while the people of Nazareth were amazed when Jesus read from Isaiah 61 about the Messiah and heard Him say He was the Messiah, they had such a limited understanding of Him that they could only believe Him to be the son of Joseph, a common local carpenter. Yes, Father, He was and is Joseph’s Son, Who experienced all our human conditions, but, I praise Him that He is also the complete fulfillment of all of Isaiah 61 and of every other Messianic prophecy that is declared through Your ancient prophets! I worship Joseph’s Son, the Son of Man and Son of God. I pray that I and all His followers today will repent of our lack of understanding of Him, and be cleansed of all disbelief. Please cause our eyes to be fastened on Him, and to speak well of Him as we become utterly amazed at all He is and does. May unprecedented numbers from all people groups and nations be gripped with the magnificence of Jesus. In His worthy name I pray these things. Amen.
