What Makes Your Hope In Christ So POTENT
Henri Nouwen, priest, professor, author, and minister to the disabled, teaches in his book With Open Hands that there are three requirements of those who hope in Christ
- We must constantly assume that with Jesus, there is always something new about to happen.
- We must remain ever vigilant to Jesus as he continues to take us where we’ve never gone before.
- We must willingly dare to take on any “risks” related to whatever Jesus does with us and wherever he takes us.
In other words, because they revolve around his Son, God’s marvelous purposes and promises—for each of us individually as well as for creation as a whole—are nothing short of POTENT.
They are life-renewing, life-reforming, life-redirecting. No doubts about that!
That’s why we must never give way to feelings that might lead us to believe the conditions of the world—or of our particular set of circumstances—are beyond the power of the reigning Son of God to overcome in triumph.
If the hope we cling to seems momentarily beyond fulfillment, the remedy for us is to contemplate more closely the authority and gracious activity of the Savior.
Because Jesus is decisive in the culmination of all of God’s plans, we must focus on him as decisive in the outcomes of all of our plans, as well.
As Paul reminded Titus, our grand, glorious, and blessed hope is this:
who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness
and to purify for himself a people that are his very own,
eager to do what is good. (2:13-14)
